933,516. Closures. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1960], No. 42266/61. Class 125(3). A closure 10 to ensure that the contents of a low-temperature storage vessel are maintained in a refrigerated state comprises a hollow plug, with top and bottom walls 16, 14 apertured at 17 and 15 respectively, which is internally subdivided by baffles 39, 42-48 and vanes 50-58, each vane being spaced adjacent a baffle and secured to a rotatable stainless steel shaft 18; both baffles and vanes extend partially across the interior of the plug. The vanes, baffles, and an apertured cover plate 40 are so designed that, on suitable rotation of said shaft 18 by means of a handle 36, an opening is provided to the interior of the vessel. Strips 60, 60a extend across the plug to aid in the prevention of air flow between the baffles and vanes when the opening is closed. The cylindrical wall 13 of the plug is made of a low thermally conductive material such as a thermosetting plastics material, and the baffles and vanes are of a polished thin gauge material such as copper or aluminium to reduce heat leak through radiation. The vanes and baffles may, alternatively, be apertured to provide the passage through the plug.
