[Also in Group XXX] An ammunition hoist comprises a cage 2 having a roof 3 and floor 4 of gas-tight construction provided at their peripheries with sealing collars 9 of elastic material and of curved cross-section. The rim of one wall of each collar 9 is connected in gas-tight manner to the cage whilst the rim of the other wall is fixed to a frame 10 which is parallel to the roof 3 or floor 4 and is mounted thereon for movement towards and away from the roof or floor, each frame being urged towards the roof or floor by springs 11 to a rest position in which the associated collar 9 bears resiliently in a gas-tight manner against the walls of the hoist shaft 1. Means is also provided which is so connected to the device for actuating the propulsion drive of the cage that, when the current is switched on, it moves the frames 10 away from the cage whereby the collars 9 are withdrawn from bearing contact with the hoist shaft and, when the current is switched off, it once again releases the frames and effects the return of the frames into the gas-tight sealing position under the action of the springs 11. As shown, a rope 12 running over pulleys 18, 13, 14 connects the frames 10 and a tensioning pulley 16 acts on the rope 12 between two pulleys 15 and is connected to pulley apparatus 17 electrically operated in association with the driving motor for the winding drum 8. When the pulley 16 moves to the right, the frames 10 are moved outwardly from the cage for release of the collars 9 and movement of the cage in the hoist shaft. Switches are provided for stopping the driving motor when the cage 2 is level with the shaft doors 1a and when a door la is opened.
