As a wedge-shaped article 11, Fig. 3, is pushed, thick end first, into a pocket 17, 26 entraining a wrapping web 55, the upper wall 26 of the pocket is progressively lowered on to the article. In the form illustrated the article pushes inwardly a plunger 31 guided by a friction bush 33, and a roller 28 carried by the plunger allows the upper wall 26 to be pivoted downwardly by springs 27. The plunger also carries a guide 56 for the wrapping web 55. Fixed guides 57 form side-tucks. As the article, which may be a portion of cheese, approaches the end of its travel into the pocket, the web 55 is cut off and a vertically reciprocating folder 51 folds the severed web over the thin end of the article and pushes it into a gripper 36 carried by the pocket. The pocket then moves vertically downwards to register with a folding channel 58 into which it is pushed by the plunger 31 thus folding the wrapper under the bottom of the article at the same time as fixed tuckers 59 form sidetucks. The tucks are subsequently folded down by inclined surfaces 61, Fig. 1, on the channels 58 and the wrapped article finally passes to a heat-sealing device 62. The article is conveyed to the machine illustrated by a pusher conveyer 13, 14 extending at right angles to the pocket 17, 26.
