Abstract
718,031. Packaging. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN. Oct. 22, 1951, [Oct. 21, 1950.] No. 24582/51. Class 94 (1). A method of wrapping cigarettes is characterized in that the cigarettes are inserted into a hollow mandrel, a wrapper is inserted underneath the mandrel and partly folded into a pouch therearound, the cigarettes are pushed, with the wrapper, from the mandrel into a sleeve to complete the folding into a pouch, and open end thereof is then closed about the cigarettes. A hollow mandrel 1 having a rear open-topped trough-like extension 4 is carried by a rod 5 reciprocable vertically in a support 7, mounted on or forming part of an intermittently rotated table so that the mandrel 1 and-support 7 are carried through feeding, folding and discharge stations. At one or more stations cigarettes are fed into the trough 4, at a further station they are pushed into the hollow mandrel 1, and at the same or a further station a wrapper A is fed so as to lie partly under the mandrel 1, Fig. 1. At this, or at a further station or during travel between stations, the mandrel i is lowered relative to its support 7 so that the side and end extensions of the wrapper are folded up over the sides and end of the mandrel by folders 8, 9 (not shown) and 12, respectively, carried by the support 7. At a further station arms 15, 16, Figs. 3, 10, pivoted at 14 to a stationary part of the machine, move inwards past the end of the mandrel so that rollers 17, 18 carried by the arms fold the upwardly extending part of the wrapper onto the top of the mandrel and blades 19, 20 carried by the arms form the end tucks, an arm 22 projecting from the pivot 14 knocking a lever 13 to move the folder 12 down away from the end of the mandrel. A pusher 3, meanwhile moved down into the trough 4, pushes the cigarettes, and with them the partly formed wrapping, from the mandrel into a sleeve 24 presented thereto, the folders ig, 20 completing the end tucks and inclined edges 25 in the sleeve folding the laterally extending portions of the top of the wrapper down onto the sides of the packet. The sleeve is then moved away from the mandrel faster than the pusher 3 to a stop 26 and the pusher 3 lifted. The open end of the packet is then closed and the packet removed from the sleeve. Instead of the mandrel i being reciprocable vertically, the support 7, or both support and mandrel, may be so movable, and instead of a linear vertical movement a swinging vertical movement may be employed.
