Packcting by wrapping- up.-In a machine for packing cigarettes &c. in which a batch of cigarettes &c. is moved by a pusher piece into engagement with a strip of wrapping material severed from a web as the batch of cigarettes meet it and is thereafter moved together with the strip through wrapping mechanism operable to envelop the cigarettes in a U-shaped block ended container open at one end, the pusher piece moves each batch into a stationary position and is then removed from the open end of the container, the side tucks and, if necessary, one or more broad flaps being folded at the open end whilst the container is stationary. The pusher piece comprises a block 1, Fig. 4, having a rearwardly extending flange 2 adapted to be supported by the machine bed and a web 3 which extends through a slot in the bed and is connected by a pivot pin 4 to the conveyer chain of the machine. When the container reaches the folding mechanism, the pusher piece falls through an opening in the bed of the machine and, through the block 1 engaging an advance portion of the bed, turns in a clockwise direction, assuming the position shown in Fig. 2. As the conveyer moves it further, the weight of the pusher piece acting through its centre of gravity, which is in advance of the pivot pin 4, turns it in the opposite direction back to its original position with respect to the conveyer ready to be supported by the machine bed when brought thereto. Spring-pressed cam-operated levers 8, Fig. 10, carrying spring-pressed tucking fingers 9 are turned inwards to fold the side tucks and before the fingers are withdrawn, the upper broad flap is folded downwards by a top tucker 11, Fig. 2, supported by a substantially parallel linkage 12, 13 and actuated by a cam 15. The tucking fingers 9 are now withdrawn and a bottom tucker 16 completes the folding. Specifications 165,891 and 169,341 are referred to.
