A complete machine for filling and closing cartons, in which cartons with opened top and bottom flaps are placed in holders 22 on an endless chain 18, comprises the following arrangement for closing the bottom flaps before the cartons are filled. Upon leaving the station A, the cartons are carried over a plate 69 and a swinging arm 71, which turn up the right and left hand bottom flaps respectively. The arm 71 is connected by a link 81, Fig. 4, to a lever 80, connected by a link 82 to an arm 77 on a shaft 74, which carries a roller 84 in the path of the holders 22. The arm is raised by the passage of a holder and is returned by a spring 78. In passing over the plate 69, the front and rear bottom flaps are opened out at right-angles to the carton by the tapered end 69<a> of the plate and receive a coating of glue from a roller 86. As the front and rear flaps leave the roller, they are folded upwards by a pair of curved fingers 101, 102, Fig. 1. During the folding of the bottom flaps, the cartons are retained in the holders by a strip 105, Fig. 1, provided with a curved end 105<a>, which bends downwards the top side and rear flaps and causes the top rear flap to travel under the strip. On leaving the strip, the top flaps spring to the vertical position. The cartons are supported at the bottom and the bottom flaps are held in the folded position by strips 106, 108.
