817,808. Packaging fibrous materials. QUESTER, W. [trading as QUESTER, W., [Firm of]]. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 11, 1956], No. 4675/57. Class 94(1). In a method of packaging fibrous material, e.g. tobacco, in a pouch comprising a pocket and a closure flap, a quantity of the material is measured and compacted to form a wad of the same shape and size as the pocket. The pocket is opened, the wad is inserted and the flap is folded mechanically around the pocket. As shown, in Fig. 8, portions of tobacco are tipped into a hopper 12, measured by a device 13 and delivered on to pivoted supports 14 on a roatary table 9. The latter is rotated intermittently to position each portion at station 16b under a ram 17 by which it is compressed to form a wad, the surface of each support being curved in the direction of its length and the under surface of the ram being curved longitudinally and transversely so that a wad of the shape shown in Figs. 5a and b is produced. The compacted wad is then moved to station 16c where the associated support 14 is swung through 90 degrees and finally to station 19 where a plunger 20 moves the wad into a waiting pouch. Each pouch 1 is fed by a conveyer 21 from a stack 6 and lifted by arms 23 to a position in which its flap 16 engages an oval filling nozzle 26. The pocket of the pouch is then opened by a finger 24 and pushed on to the nozzle by a plunger 27. The nozzle and pouch are then moved along a guide rail 28 to station 19 where the wad is pushed through the nozzle into the pouch. Blades 29 and 30 grip the pouch to define the folding line 3, Fig. 2, and transfer the filled pouch to a conveyer associated with a reciprocating folder 32 and a fixed folder 33 which fold the flap 1b around the pocket as shown in Fig. 4. The flap may be secured by a label.
