Abstract

555,622. Packeting. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. March 28. 1942 No. 4150. Convention date, May 12, 1941. [Class 94 (i)] A wrapping machine comprises means for receiving an article from a conveyer and lifting it towards a delivery channel, and means for applying a wrapper to and folding it around the article during the lifting and delivering movements. The articles a, Fig. 1, are brought up to the elevator 28 by a continuously-moving conveyer chain 23 bearing spaced lugs 24. The articles are removed in succession from the conveyer, and pushed on to the elevator by a pair of fingers 30 which move both horizontally and vertically in an endless path indicated by the line 41. After receiving an article, the elevator rises accompanied by a fold-former 51', Fig. 14, provided with upstanding wings 52'. As the article is raised, it picks up a wrapper a, Fig. 1, which is draped about the front and rear of the article by folders 70, and the projecting ends of the wrapper are folded by folders 71 and by plough folders 72, 73, as shown in Fig. 14. The end folds are made over the wings 52<SP>1</SP> which thus co-operate with the folders to produce sharply-defined end folds independently of any irregularities in the shapes of the ends of the articles. As soon as the article is received against the top plate 75 of the folding-box, the wings 52<SP>1</SP> are retracted, and tucking-plates 78 are moved laterally to tuck the end folds under the article, and to support it and hold the folds in position after the elevator receeds. The end folds are now completed, as shown in Fig. 26. Next, a folding-plate 97 is moved laterally beneath the article to turn the rear flap under the article. Finally, the article is thrust laterally by a pusher 107 which carries it into a delivery channel 118 where it is gripped between upper and lower delivery belts 119, the front flap of the wrapper being folded under the article during this movement Before this movement, however, the depending front flaps may be daubed with adhesive on its inner surface f, as shown in Fig. 22, by the front edge of a plate 125 which is moved laterally over a gumming roller 148. Cams attached to the plate 125 depress the roller 148 as the plate moves forward to prevent adhesive from being spread over the plate. The position of the plate, and of the parts of the folding box, can be adjusted to adapt them for articles of various sizes.
