243,984. Rushen, P. C., (Gordan Machine Co.). May 11, 1925. Apparatus for setting up collapsed boxes. In machines for packeting small articles by inserting a predetermined number or quantity in boxes or cartons of relatively stiff paper board or like material, for instance of the type described in Specification 212,337, the cartons are fed to the machine in collapsed formation and may be of the form shown opened out in Fig. 27, with major end flaps a', b<1> at the ends of the side walls a, b, and minor end flaps c<1>, d<1> at the ends of the narrow walls c, d. Alternatively, the cartons may have a tucking flap f, as shown in Fig. 23. The cartons are pressed forward in a guide way 14, Figs. 1 and 23, by a weight or spring so that the foremost is arrested by spring detents 18, and spring blades 30, Figs. 2 and 35, mounted on a vertically movable carrier 24 descend and enter the carton. One of the blades has an extension 30a which initially bears upon a portion of the upper flap a<1>. Upon the descent of the blades 30, associated blades 33, which are initially in contact with the blades 30 are moved laterally therefrom into the relative position shown in Fig. 36, thereby opening the carton. The lateral movement is effected by the action of a slope 38, Fig. 2, on rollers 40. At a certain stage in the descent of the blades, catches 42 engage the upper edges of the carton flaps and push the carton positively downwards into the position shown in Fig. 11. The descent causes the folding in of the lower minor flap d<1> against an inclined member 44. The lower minor flap is meanwhile inserted between members 45, 46. The carton is now between the arms 75, Fig. 1, of carriers on endless chains 59, and is moved to the left, Fig. 11, folding down the minor flap c<1> upon the member 46. The lower flap a<1> has meanwhile been forced outwards by a guide 77 and the inclination is increased by a fixed curved rod 78 so as to expose the flap for the application of adhesive by rolls 80, Fig. 3. The rolls are loosely journaled in bearings in an arm 81 oscillated so as to transfer adhesive from a supply roll 88 to both sides of the flap. While moving to the next station the gummed flap a<1> is folded into the position shown in Fig. 29 by a fixed curved rod 93 and the other flap b<1> is also folded up by an inclined member. In a modification, the end may be closed by tucking in extensions f, Fig. 23, by means of curved guides.
