Abstract

261,467. Mellor, L. May 19, 1925. Packeting by wrapping-up.- Relates to machines for the wrapping of articles of approximately uniform size, such as loaves, in waxed papers, a loaf &c., encircled by a wrapper as shown in Fig. 5, is placed on a table 22, Fig. 1, being positioned by arms 51 then in a raised position. A lever 19 is lowered to depress, through links 18, 17, 14. 13, a slide 11 carrying adjustably-mounted folders 23 - - 25. The folders 25 first depress the projecting portions 44, Fig. 5, of the wrapper on to the ends of the loaf. Folders 23, 24, which are in the form of overlapping plates with converging edges 23<a>, 24<a>, then form the folds 45, 46, Fig. 6, leaving a depending triangle flap 47 at each end. The loaf is pushed along the table 22 into alignment with bottom folders 31 which are caused, during the reverse operation of the hand lever to move inwards and fold the flaps below the table. A separating plate may be disposed between the flaps to prevent entaglement during the withdrawal of the folders. During the subsequent travel of the package to the right a ramp 49 guides the flaps over rollers 50 and on to a heated plate 39 so that the wax coating of the wrapper is melted, and the flaps are sealed below the package by travelling over rollers 41 and a table 42. The preliminary arrangement of the loaf may be carried out automatically, for instance as described in Specification 251,312. The machine may be operated manually or by power. According to the Provisional Specification, the articles may be fed automatically into position on the paper on the wrapping table. The articles on being delivered by a shoot or conveyer on to a table, are fed on to the paper by a pivoted' flap on an oscillatory arm. The paper may be automatically fed to the table. The formation of a package is described in which the end folds are secured to the ends of the article instead of underneath by a combination of stationary and moving folders. An endless series of arms may move the articles through the machine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 19511/97, 8338/07, 135,162, and 198,486.
