Abstract

932,558. Electric heating elements utilizing dielectric heating. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL, and G. T. WRIGHT. Aug. 22, 1960 [Sept. 14, 1959], No. 31285/59. Class 39 (3). An electric heater comprises an element of ferro-electric material 10 arranged between electrodes 11, and power supply means (not shown) arranged to supply an alternating potential at a frequency less than 100 c.p.s. to the electrodes through leads 12 to produce an alternating electric field in the material. The material 10 may be a plate of a sodium-lead niobate ceramic or barium titanate made by pressing, casting or extrusion from powdered materials followed by sintering, and the electrodes 11 may be formed by a painted or sprayed layer of colloidal graphite or silver paint or by a coating, containing organo-metallic compounds, which is fired after drying to decompose the compounds leaving a metallic conductive layer. The external faces of the electrodes 11 and preferably the other external surfaces of the heater are coated with insulating material 13. A number of thin sheets of ferro-electric material and electrodes may be sandwiched together with alternate electrodes connected to opposite poles of the supply source, or a tubular ferro-electric member may have electrodes formed on its inner and outer surfaces (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The heater may be used to heat gases or liquids or for the direct heating of floors when owing to its leading power factor it may also be used for power factor compensation, e.g. in a factory.
