Abstract
1,190,195. Heat films. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 4 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 35970/66. Heading H5H. An electric heating element comprises a resistive film of an oxide or oxides of a metal, or metals, of one of the elements ruthenium, osmium palladium, iridium and rhodium adhered to a heat-insulating substrate. The element is made by applying to the substrate a solution or suspension of one or more of the above elements or compounds, together with a binder or thickener, drying the layer or allowing it to dry and heat treating the coated substrate in an oxidizing atmosphere to oxidize the metal layer. The heating temperature is in the region of 600- 900‹ C. Such a temperature is sufficient in the cases of iridium and platinum only when the metal is applied as a suitable compound. In one specific example a resin thinned with benzyl alcohol and containing ruthenium is applied to a glass or alumina substrate by painting, dipping, spraying or screen printing. After drying the substrate is heated in air at 800‹ C. to produce a film of ruthenium oxide. Several layers of the solution may be applied prior to heating. Other of the metals, e.g. rhodium and/or iridium may be added. After electrodes are added the element is encapsulated in a glaze of boro-silicate glass or a frit glaze. The film may also be made by applying ruthenium trichloride or ruthenium nitrosyl nitrate to the substrate before heating and oxidizing. The element may be used in hotplates and heating panels.
