Abstract

A resistance element is constituted by a solidified glass matrix in which is dispersed in finely divided form at least one oxide of a metal from the group consisting of iridium and ruthenium. Preferably the composition by weight of the element is solidified glass between 96 and 50% and the metal oxide between 4 and 50%. In manufacture of the element the finely divided oxide of ruthenium or iridium is mixed with finely divided glass and the mixture is mixed with an organic vehicle to form a suspension of suitable viscosity. The suspension is deposited as a layer on a high-temperature-resistant non-conductive substrate and fired to produce a resistive film, the vehicle being driven off. The surface of the substrate is preferably lapped and polished and the surface of the fired-on film may be polished. The substrate may be flat or cylindrical (Figs. 1, 2, not shown).
