Abstract

1,268,684. Electric heating elements. CARBORUNDUM CO. 11 April, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 18744/69. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] An electric resistance heating element for use as an igniter of fuels comprises a conducting flexible filament helically wound around an insulating body made of a material resistant to oxidation at 1200‹C., e.g. alumina, mullite, beryllia, magnesium oxide and steatite, the filament having a surface resistant to oxidation at 1200‹ C., the filament comprising a core of graphite or carbon, coated with a non-oxidizing silicon carbide coating by sputtering, flame spraying, plasma deposition or pyrolytic deposition. The filament may be helically wound on an oxidation resistant cylindrical triangular or rectangular body.
