Abstract

A metal-sheathed electric resistance heating element comprises a heating resistor 9, a body of refractory electrically insulating materia 10 and a stainless steel sheath 8 with a layer 11 of nickel on its outer surface. Preferably the insulating material is a ceramic, the sheathed element is U-shaped and the nickel layer is applied by electroplating, by dipping or by spraying. After deposition of the nickel, which is 1-20 microns thick, the sheath may be heat-treated to cause part of the nickel to diffuse into the stainless steel. The nickel layer is stated to reduce stress corrosion when the heater is used in an aqueous medium containing chloride ions.
