Abstract

1,135,138. Lighters. KANTHAL A.B. 23 Oct., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 48129/67. Heading F4F. [Also in Divisions C7, H2 and H5] Molybdenum disilicide heating elements 10, 14, with comparatively thin incandescent zones 13, 15, and thicker terminal portions 11, 12, and 16, 17, have their thin zones formed by chemical action upon the elements. A mixture of nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid and water is used, and any parts of the element not to be subjected to the chemical decomposition during treatment are protected by an acid resistant surface coating of plastics. The molybdenum disilicide elements may contain up to 40% by volume of ceramic additions, such as glass or silicon carbide, rich in SiO 2 . The elements are used for gas igniters or in cigarette lighters. The terminal portions 11, 12, have flame-sprayed aluminium contact portions 11A, 12A.
