Abstract

930,904. Indicating overload in jib cranes. BRITISH HOIST & CRANE CO. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1959 [May 15, 1958], No. 15634/58. Class 78 (4). A mobile crane 110, Fig. 5, is provided with a device which indicates the overturning moment about the front wheels 111. In one embodiment, the rear axle 14, 15, Fig. 1, is pivoted about a spindle 17 which lies in the longitudinal axle of the vehicle. Between the spindle 17 and the axle are resilient members 21, 22, 23, 24. As the load on the beam varies the dimensions of the resilient members alter and these changes in dimension are used as an indication of the load on the axle by being transmitted mechanically and hydraulically to a series of micro-switches which are used to operate indicator lamps which warn the crane driver of the approach of overload conditions of the crane. In a further embodiment the invention is applied to a crane having a slewable jib. The rear road wheels 112, Fig. 6, are mounted on a transverse member 122 which is pivotally mounted in cross-members 123, 124. The crossmember 124 is pivotally secured at 127 to a side member 120 and at its other end is a pressure cell 128 which responds to the force between cross-member 124 and a side member 121. A pressure gauge or indicator 130 is coupled to the cell by a pipe 131. On pressure gauge 130 are arranged a series of sets of contacts which are operated as successively increasing pressures are indicated by the gauge. Specification 843,024 is referred to.
