Abstract

943,033. Axle connections for laminated springs. N. RANGER. Dec. 6, 1960 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 42028/60. Heading B7D. A vehicle axle is rigidly secured at one end 11 to one longitudinal semi-elliptic spring and at the other end 10 is resiliently secured to a second longitudinal semi-elliptic spring. Fig. 3 shows a resilient mounting for a spring comprising an annular rubber bush 10B retained on axle 3A by two collars 10C and held within a split housing 10, the two parts of which are secured to each other and to the spring by U bolts 10A. Alternatively, the spring and axle end may each be secured to a block of resilient material. Longitudinal location of the axle is provided by a pair of radius rods below the springs. As applied to twin axles, Fig. 4, the resilient connections 14, 17 are on opposite sides of the vehicle and the adjacent ends of the springs on each side are connected by a lever 21 pivoted to the chassis. To avoid loss of traction when a rear wheel 24 drops into a depression 25 and raises through lever 21, the front driving wheel 28 on that side, a pressure exerting element 29 may be fitted to the end 27 of the lever which may take the form of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram or a screw jack and may be arranged to be operated automatically or manually.
