[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXVIII] In a braking device, for magnetic tape recorders, a graphite disc 1, freely mounted on a shaft 2, is forced by spring 11 into engagement with an annular felt pad 10, Fig. 2, carried by a steel disc 7 fixed to shaft 2 by a pin 9, the spring 11 being adjustable by nuts 12, 13. A brake shoe 3 on arm 4<SP>11</SP> of lever 4, is forced against disc 1 by an adjustable spring 6 with a force which is decreased or increased by frictional drag depending on the direction of rotation of disc 1, the arm 4<SP>1</SP> of lever 4 being pivoted at 5<SP>1</SP>. When discs 7 and 1 are rotated clockwise, the braking force on disc 1 is reduced and the frictional coupling between discs 7 and 1 overcomes the braking force applied to disc 1, the disc 7 and 1 continue to rotate together and the shaft 2 is braked by shoe 3 via discs 1 and 7. For counter-clockwise rotation, the braking force on disc 1 is increased and overcomes the frictional coupling causing relative rotation of discs 1 and 7, the shaft 2 then being braked by the pad 10 engaging disc 1. When applied to tape recorders, one device is mounted on the shaft of one spool and a second device, but with arms 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> reversed, on the shaft of a second spool. When the spools are rotating counterclockwise the first spool will be the supply spool and have the greater braking force.
