In a magnetic recording apparatus, a spring-loaded resilient-tyred wheel 18 presses a magnetic tape 21 against a constant speed capstan 15, said wheel. being carried by a lever 17, pivoted at 16, which is adapted to be moved against a spring-loading 23 between operative and inoperative positions by an eccentric cam 24. In the embodiment described, the shaft 19 of the wheel 18 is suspended freely in apertures 20 in lever 17, and the spring 20x acting upon the shaft 19 serves to press the wheel 18 against the tape 21 and capstan 15 when the lever 17 is in the operative position. When in this position, the lever 17 permits pads 31 to press the tape 21 against erazing and recording heads 10. When the lever 17 is moved to the inoperative position abutments 33 move bellcranks 29, carrying the pads 31, away from the tape 21 and heads 10. Furthermore, a cam 42 on the same shaft as that carrying cam 24 serves to open motor-switch 44 and also allow a cross-bar 41 and a bar 39 to move under the influence of springs 37, 43, whereby brakes 36 are applied to turntables 34 carrying spools 27. 28.
