Abstract

810,674. Driving recording tapes &c. BAR, S. May 24, 1956 [May 24, 1955], No. 16169/56. Class 40 (2). A sound-record carrier feeding mechanism has a supply-spool 1 freely mounted on one arm of an electrically or otherwise actuated spring-returned swinging lever 14 the other arm of which carries a roller 15 to transmit a drive from a driving roller 3 to a take-up spool 2; a second similarly-controlled swinging lever 17 carries on one arm a pressure roller 11 to urge the carrier 10 against a capstan 12, and on the other arm a pair of brakes 19, 18, one strong and one weak, adapted to act selectively on the supply spool 1. The levers 14, 17 are swung about their pivots 13, 16, against return-springs 7, 8, either mechanically (by a single button acting through cams, linkages or levers, or by an individual button for each lever) or electrically by magnets or solenoids, one of which is indicated at 6; in addition, the lever 17 may be moved to an intermediate' position (wherein the roller 11 and both brakes 18, 19 are withdrawn) by a spring-loaded button 26 having a conical surface 28 which engages the side of the lever 17. For normal travel of the carrier 10 past the sound head 9, the magnet 6 pulls the pressure roller 11 towards the capstan 12 and applies the weak brake 18 to the supply spool 1, while spring 7 maintains the roller 15 in engagement with the driving roller 3 and the take-up spool 2 (both spools have the usual frictional mounting); for stopping, de-energization of the magnet 6 allows the spring 8 to withdraw the pressure roller 11 and brake 18, and to apply the strong brake 19. For fast forward travel, depression of the knob 26 first opens contacts 31 to deenergize the magnet 6 as for stopping, but when the conical surface 28 engages the lever 17 the strong brake 19 is withdrawn and the take-up spool 2 winds at full speed without slip. For re-winding, the magnet 6 is de-energized and the magnet coupled to the lever 14 is energized to move the latter anti-clockwise to disengage the roller 15 and to bring the spool 1 out of range of the brakes 18, 19 and into engagement with a driving roller 4. The spool 2 may be permanently braked by a fixed brake (not shown), or a brake may be mounted on the lever 17 near the roller 11, so as to be operative on the spool 2 only when the lever 17 is at its anti-clockwise limit; during re-winding, this latter brake is withdrawn by a lug on an extension of the lever 14 (Fig. 2, not shown).
