In order to compensate for the fact that with a uniform tape speed the thickness of a coil of tape decreases more rapidly as the diameter of the tape decreases, the arm 9 of an indicator has two or more rollers 13, 12 which successively engage the surface of the coil, as the tape is being unwound. The lever is pivoted at 10, and the rollers are urged against the coil by a spring 11.
