In a recording and reproducing apparatus in which a magnetic tape is driven past the magnetic heads by a capstan, a stopping and starting arrangement for the drive of the tape comprises a' rotatable element 80 mounted around the capstan bearing 75 in such a manner that it can be set in one of two positions under the control of a solenoid 86 so that in one position, Fig. 4, the tape 27 is pressed against the capstan 47 by a pressure wheel 48 to drive the tape, and in the other position, Fig. 5, an edge 82 of the rotatable element 80 pushes the tape and pressure wheel 48 away from the capstan 47 to stop the drive of the tape. The wheel 48 is normally pressed into engagement with the capstan by a spring which is relaxed when it is desired to perform a rewinding operation, the tape being drawn on to the take-up spool through a clutch which slips when the tape engages the capstan. Tension is maintained in the tape by means of a reverse direction drive and slipping clutch acting on the take-off spool, the slip being much greater than that acting on the take-up spool.
