Abstract
841,586. Magnetic recording apparatus. DICTAPHONE CORPORATION. April 26, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 13343/57. Class 40 (2). A portable tape record apparatus is provided with a removable magazine carrying spools having central portions protruding through loose-fitting bearings in the magazine to facilitate engagement with driving-means having tapered engaging surfaces to effect alignment of the spools. Fig. 1 shows the general appearance and the arrangement of the controls on the casing, a front door of which is provided with windows 42, 44 through which the amount of tape 46, Fig. 5, on the spools 84, 86 in a removable magazine 30, Figs. 2 and 4, may be observed. The spool hubs are provided with tapered internal teeth for easy engagement with splined driving members 128, 130. The shape and general arrangement of the magazine is symmetrical to allow it to be reversed for doubletrack recording. When inserted into the machine the right-hand spool 86 becomes the takeup spool during recording or reproducing, and a conical-pointed pin holds back a pressure-pad 110 to permit free reeling on to the take-up spool. Operation of ON-OFF lever 12 to the ON position moves a forked member 170, Fig. 9, past a dead-centre position against initial effect of a torsion-spring 240 to permit a spring 174 to rotate a lever 160, carrying a pressure-roller 156, about a fixed point 162, to bring the pressure roller into contact with a capstan 150. A motor 140 drives the capstan via a belt 146, and a gear-wheel 176 on the same shaft drives the spline shaft 131 via a gear-wheel 178, friction wheels 182, 184 and a slipping clutch 185. When the control-lever 14 is switched to REWIND a forked member 202 moves a lever 206 about fixed point 162 and draws a hooked bar 214 to the left, as viewed in Fig. 9, and causes a plate 180 carrying friction-wheel 182 to be moved out of contact with wheel 184, and wheel 190 to be brought into driving connection with the shaft associated with the left-hand spool via jockey wheel 192. At the same time a pin 116 on the bar 214 lifts the left-hand pressurepad 106 from the tape, and a cam surface 220 on the bar 214 lifts the pressure-wheel from the capstan 150. When lever 14 is in either REPRODUCE or REWIND position, an erazing magnet 262 is lifted from the tape by cam 278. The lever 14 cannot be pushed directly into the RECORD position, but requires firstly a sideways movement against a leaf-spring 280.
