Abstract

1,246,341. Cassette machines; adapters. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 17 March, 1969 [19 March, 1968 (2); 21 March, 1968; 3 April, 1968], No. 13785/69. Heading G5R. An adapter, enabling a cassette to be used with a cartridge player for which it was not designed, comprises a head, a tape transport and insertion opening for the cassette and means for electrically coupling the head to the amplifier circuit of the player when the adapter is inserted in the player. The transport is either self-powered or driven from the player capstan. The adapter 21 is in the general form of an eight- or four-track endless cartridge and contains a spring-loaded 28 movable plate 26 carrying a capstan 34 and spool spindles 29, 30. A cassette is loaded on to the plate 26 and pushed in until held by a catch 38, whereupon the tape is pinched between capstan 34 and pressure roller 50, and record/playback and erase heads 51, 52 enter the cassette. A switching rod 71 operates switch 17 to energize the player when the adapter is loaded so that capstan 15 is driven, thereby rotating the adapter capstan 34 and spindles 29, 30 by a system of belts, pulleys and rollers. Release of catch 38 by knob 37 frees the plate 26 to disengage the capstan 34 drive and release switch 17. In this position, movement of knob 55 to right or left causes lever 53 to pivot about pin 54 and thereby engage roller 60 with roller 36 on capstan shaft 34, or roller 64 with roller 33 on spindle 30 to fast wind or rewind respectively, a slide 56 coupled to the lever 53 operating L-rod 68 to operate the switch 17. A record button 74 is operable, when a portion is removed from the cassette, to operate switch 75 and permit recording. Electrical connection to the player is made by contacts 73, contacts 13, or by capacitive or electromagnetic coupling with the player head 14. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the switching arm 71 is replaced by a lug (80) which generates a switch (79) controlling the amplifier circuit of the player, and the adapter contains a motor energized from the player.
