Abstract

672,793. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. GRACE ELECTRONICS, Inc. June 27, 1949. No. 17022/49. Class 40 (ii). In a magnetic recorder having feeder and receiver turntables adapted to receive reels containing a recording tape which moves from one to the other past an erasing magnet, a magnetic head, and a driving capstan, there are provided means normally braking the turntables, means for selectively rotating the turntables, and a control lever connected to the braking means and the rotating means, and operable to release the braking means and drive either turntable. Tape reel 21, on which the unused tape is initially rolled, has a positive driving connection with a turntable 42. The tape passes a guide pulley 23, erasing head 24, recording head 25 and coacting operating pad 30, a drive capstan 27 and a pulley 31 for pressing the tape on to the capstan, and is then fixed to a reel 22 frictionally coupled to a turntable 43. A motor drives capstan 27 and, through a belt 54, a drive wheel 51 mounted on a plate 45 pivoted towards its upper end. The lower end of plate 45 is connected by a spring 80 and rod 19 to a control lever 76 pivoted at 77. Thus when the lower end of lever 76 is moved to right or left the plate 45 moves likewise, and drive wheel 51 engages turntable 42 or 43 respectively. At the same time a pin 58 on plate 45 engages the sloping ends of notches 64, 65 in levers 59, 60 to release brakes 70, 71. For recording or reproducing, lever 76 is moved to the left, to drive turntable 43. Also a pin 85 on lever 76 is moved away to allow a spring 84 to urge roller 31 towards the drive capstan 27. The tape then runs from reel 21 on to reel 22. When reproducing, switch 16 is moved to remove the erasing head 24 from the tape. To rewind the tape, lever 76 is moved to the right causing drum 42 to be driven at high speed. Also pin 85 withdraws the pulley 31, and a pin 93 on plate 45 engages a spring 92 and causes withdrawal of the operating pad 30. A link 109 causes removal of the erasing head 24. The control lever 76 is locked in its right and left positions by the engagement of spring- urged dogs 96, 97 engaging an aperture 95, the dogs being released by the inner end of a catch 98 pivoted on the end of lever 76.
