804,136. Magnetic recording apparatus. V.M. CORPORATION. April 18, 1955 [April 26, 1954], No. 11071/55. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic tape or wire recorder driving- mechanism comprising a frame 10, take-up and supply reels 42, 58, a power-driven capstan 24, and a pivotally-mounted carriage-bar 12 carrying a pressure roller 26 for holding tape 28 against the capstan, a reciprocably mounted operating arm 18 is connected at one end to the carriage bar 12 and at the other end pivotally to a rockable brake lever 34 biased by a spring 48 to move a brake shoe 36 mounted on the lever to engage a drum 40 rotatable with the take-up reel 42 in which engaged position the brake is held by a locking-device 50 engageable with an operating arm detent 52; reciprocation of operating arm 18 alternately moves the pressure roller 26 into and out of the position engaging the tape with the capstan 24 and the brake shoe 36 out of and into take-up reel braking position, and the mechanism is said to eliminate audible surge clicks caused by starting and stopping of the tape by arranging that the brake shoe stops the take-up reel just after the pressure roller releases from the capstan so that castiing of the supply wheel 58 slackens the tape 28. The operating arm 18 is manually operable and is biased by a spring 30. A motor, not shown, drives the take-up reel via a wheel 46 and slipping belt 44.
