[Class 40 (ii)] In an apparatus for recording and reproducing sound, in which magnetic wire or tape is used, the spools 25, 26 are carried in a detachable magazine 11 which also contains the transducer 31, the wiping head 30, a driving element 28 coupled to a reversible motor 32 in the main body 10 of the apparatus controlled by a reversing switch 37, whereby the medium is drawn from one spool to the other and vice versa, and an indicating device 16 driven by the shaft 29 of said driving element 28 which interrupts the current to the motor 32 when a given length of the medium 27 has passed from one spool to the other. A helical spring 50 is provided between the spools 25, 26 or the shaft 45 and coupled to them and tensioned so that the medium 27 is maintained in tension over the driving element 28. The shaft 45 is mounted at suoh an angle to the shaft 29 that the medium 27 is fed on to the oentre of the spools 25, 26. Details are given, Figs. 4a and 4b (not shown) of a cam mechanism which slowly moves the shaft 45, and the spools 25, 26 thereon, to and fro in an axial direction to enable the medium 27 to be wound evenly on the spools 25, 26.
