[Class 40 (ii)] In a telegraphone, the spools 12, 13 carrying the magnetic wire 11 are mounted side by side on a common axis in a detachable cartridge 10, the wire 11 passing from the spool 12 to the spool 13 over a guide-block 14 which engages the transducer 20 when the cartridge 10 is inserted into the recording and reproducing apparatus, the spool 13 being driven by a motor 7 having a tyred shaft 8 in frictional engagement with the rim of the spool 13. When most of the wire has been wound on to the spool 13, the wire comes into contact with a bracket 19 which displaces the spool 13 and the cartridge 10 so that engagement of the tyred shaft 8 with rim of spool 13 is interrupted. The wire may be rewound on to the other spool by withdrawing the cartridge and re-inserting it after rotation through 180 degrees. Uniform tension of the wire 11 between the spools 12, 13 is maintained by providing the outer side of each spool with a narrow rim 33 which is urged constantly into frictional engagement with the inner surface of the casing by a spring washer 34 mounted between the spools 12, 13. The outer face of each spool is provided with openings 31 which permit inspection, through window 32, of the quantity of wire on the spools, the speed at which they are driven being sufficient to ensure persistence of vision so that the quantity can be observed during rotation.
