Abstract

888,976. Magnetic record apparatus. SANDERS (ELECTRONICS) Ltd., W. H. Feb. 27, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 6872/60. Class 40 (2). In a portable battery-operated magnetic tape or wire apparatus having no driving capstan but in which the medium is drawn direct from one reel to the other at constant angular velocity of the take-up reel, a shaft 49 is permanently coupled intermediate its length with a motor drive pulley 57 and is swingable from a position in which one end 60 is in driving engagement with the reel holder 16 carrying the take-up reel to another position in which the other end 62 is in driving engagement with the other reel holder 15 carrying the supply spool. The shaft 49 is mounted in bearing members 52, 53 forming a fork on a member 54 mounted on the end of a shaft 65 rotatable in a fixed bracket 68 having a normal bearing at the upper end 66, as viewed in Fig. 3, and an elongated hole, in the direction perpendicular to the mounting plate, in the lower end 67. The shaft 49 is swung to one or other of its extreme driving positions by the arms 76, 77 of a bracket 75, mounted on the shaft 65, and engaging upstanding lugs 78, 79 on the member 54. The bracket 75 is moved to one or other extreme position by a pin 93 thereon, and a bell-crank 88 connected at 87 to a main control lever 10 pivoted at 82. The position of lever 10 in an open gate 83, Fig. 3, represents a neutral OFF position, and thus when moved into that position both ends of the shaft 49 engage the reel holders 15, 16 under the influence of a spring 74 and bracket 71 acting on the shaft 65 so that the holders tend to be driven in opposing directions. The movement of lever 10 through gate 83 into slot 85 effects a RECORD position, when a forward drive is effected by the end 60 of shaft 49, a pressure pad 43 presses the tape 35 against the record head 39 by means of a pin 108 on a lever 110, an eraze head 41 on a lever 102 is also pressed against the tape, and a slide bar 124 appropriately switches the amplifier connections for RECORD. When the lever 10 is moved into the slot 84 for REPRODUCE it moves clear of the end 105 of lever 102 so that the eraze head is left clear of the tape. Movement of lever 10 into a slot 86 establishes rewinding engagement of the end 62 of shaft 49 with reel holder 15 by causing a reverse movement of the bracket 75.
