When a switch member 21 is rotated anticlockwise to the "play" position, Fig. 1b, a cam 22 allows an arm 16 to swing about a pivot 18 under the action of a spring 20. As the arm moves, it brings a roller 14 mounted on the arm into contact with a magnetic tape and forces it into contact with a capstan 4, Fig. 3. It also moves a pressure pad 30 to force the tape into contact with a recording head 31, and allows a plate 27 carrying a pulley 25 to swing about its pivot 28 to bring a friction wheel 25a on the pulley into engagement with an enlarged piston 26a of the spindle 26 for the take-up spool. The pulley 25a is driven from a pulley on the roller 14 by a belt 24. In the "off" position of the switch Fig. 1a (not shown), the roller 14 is moved away from the capstan, the friction wheel 25a' is disengaged from the spindle 26, the pad 30 is moved away from the recording head, and a pivoted arm 32 applies a brake 34 to the take up spool. In the "rewind" position Fig. 1c (not shown), the brake is removed from the take-up spool and the arm 17 is moved to bring the roller 15 into engagement with an enlarged part 4a of the capstan to drive the other spool spindle 36a. The enlarged part 4a gives a fast rewind. The recording and erasing heads 2, 3, Fig. 5, are mounted on a channel member which has dimples 10 in its base. By adjusting screws 12 the angle of the heads may be varied, by pivoting the channel about its dimples 10.
