Abstract
693,685. Magnetic sound recording and reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 22, 1951 [Jan. 20, 1950], No. 1530/50. Class 40 (ii). A flexible magnetic record e.g. a tape, is drawn from a supply reel 7 by a roller 16 engaging with a driven roller 15 over erasing and transducing heads 1a, 1 and is wound onto a spool 8. The 'tape is shown in full lines in its inoperative position. The position of the heads in relation to the path of the tape during transducing is such that the tape is flexed by the heads. When in its operative position, it engages slots 5 in the heads, and is gripped between a felt pad 22 and an abutment 18 (Fig. 2, not shown) to increase the tension in the tape at the transducing head 1 and thus reduce speed variations in the tape, during recording and reproducing. The pad 22 is carried by an arm 23 which is rotated about a spindle 24 to bring the pad 22 against the abutment 18, by a control knob 32 acting through links 31 30. The pad is urged against the abutment by a spring (Fig. 3, not shown). The tape is rewound on moving a control knob 34. The knobs 32, 34 are so interconnected that the.knob 34 may only be moved to the "rewind" position, when the pad 22 is moved away from the abutment. A roller 35 is mounted on the arm 23 to withdraw the tape from the abutment when the arm 23 is pivoted outwardly. The roller 16 is moved into and from engagement with the roller 15 by movement of the knob 32. The apparatus is covered by two covers as described in Specification 693,695.
