Abstract

930,697. Velocity-modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. March 15, 1961 [April 6, 1960], No. 9541/61. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] High-frequency apparatus in the form of a R.F. wave propagating structure or of a klystron resonator comprises tuning means having a tuning rod 3 extending into the wave propagating structure or resonator 4 and adapted to be moved to effect tuning therein, the tuning rod being supported by means comprising an inner bearing 6 formed by a dielectric sleeve and an outer bearing formed by screw means, which include threads upon the tuning rod mating with threads on a tuner assembly 9<SP>1</SP> to permit adjustment of the tuning rod relative to the said structure or resonator and providing a frictional bearing between the mating threaded portions, the arrangement being such that the tuner rod makes no metal-to-metal contact with the parts of the wave propagating structure or resonator in regions carrying R.F. currents. A tuner mounting sleeve 9 of stainless steel is preferably provided, and the tuner assembly 10 preferably made of graphite cast steel. A quarter-wave choke 5 is provided, and the sleeve 5<SP>1</SP> made triangular in cross-section so as to grip the insulator sleeve 6 tightly and so as to accommodate tuning rods of differing diameter.
