Abstract

810,327. Electric resonators. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. July 3, 1956 [July 14, 1955], No. 20636/56. Class 40 (8). A cavity resonator for a klystron comprising a rectangular waveguide section 37 brazed to an adapter 32 which is itself brazed to the klystron has a tuning rod 43, adjustable within a screw-threaded sleeve 42, the inner end of which is formed by four segments which are stressed outwardly so as to bear against the surface of the bearing 41. This construction allows the tuning rod to be held firmly without the use of a lock nut. The end of the tuning screw 47 is also provided with slots 48 to enable it to grip the sleeve 42 tightly. Resonance in the segmented tuning rod is prevented by (a) a conductive wire soldered to the inner end of the tuning rod 43 and coupling the segments; (b) filling slots 46 in the inner end of the rod 43 with, e.g., rubber and powdered iron; or (c) providing a bore 46<SP>1</SP> in the inner end of the rod. The slots 46 and surfaces of the bore 46<SP>1</SP> are coated with, e.g., copper or gold plate. The outer bearing surface of the rod 43 is e.g. chromium plated. To compensate for variations in temperature during operation the sleeve 42 and screw 47 may be made of a material having a high coefficient of expansion, e.g. beryllium copper, while the rod 43 is made of a metal having a low coefficient, e.g. " Kovar " (Registered Trade Mark). The resonator has an outlet through a flange opening 38<SP>1</SP>. A mica window 34 is sealed by glass fillets 34<SP>1</SP> between the resonator and the klystron. A window loading screw 35 is provided.
