Abstract
929,896. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Jan. 30, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 3544/61. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a tube and shell heat-exchanger the tubes of which are connected to headers B which lie within the shell A and have inlet and outlet connections passing through holes in the wall of the shell, each connection is in the form of a tube C of smaller outside diameter than the inside diameter of a tubular stub D extending outwards from the shell and connected to the shell by means of a thermal sleeve G having an inner tube butt-welded to the tube C and a coaxial skirt butt-welded to the stub D. The headers are connected to the shell by positioning the header within the shell so that the tube C passes through and extends beyond the stub D, butt-welding the tube to the sleeve G, and then repositioning the header within the shell to bring the skirt of the sleeve into abutment with the stub and then butt-welding the skirt to the stub. The tube C may have an extension piece E.
