Abstract

684,602. Tubular heat-exchangers. ROSSI, G. March 14, 1949 [Aug. 4, 1948], No. 6943/49. Class 64 (iii) In tubular heat exchange element for steam boilers, &c. comprising an outer tube A containing at least one inner smoke tube B the inlet and outlet of which are at or near the ends of the outer one, at least part of the inner tube is corrugated transversely in such a way as to create eddy currents in the smoke as well as to permit expansion. The corrugations may be parallel or helical, and be of increasing depth and decreasing pitch in the direction of flow through the inner tube. In one form, Fig 2, a single inner tube B is coaxial with the outer tube A, and the ends of the tubes may fit tightly together and then be soldered or welded together, or the joints between them may have annular metallic packing. A deflector W may be provided at the outlet end of the inner tube. Alternatively, the lower end of the inner tube may be bent to lead through the side of the outer tube. A helical baffle may be provided in the inner tube. In another form, Fig. 4, several corrugated inner tubes B are connected to end plates E of which the upper one is fixed and the lower one movable by expansion of the tubes B. Packing 0 is provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (a) a tubular element in which the inner tube is inclined to the axis of the outer tube, (b) another in which both ends of the inner tube are bent over, (c) others in which the water inlet at the bottom of the outer tube is supported by a strut which may be tubular, (d) a combination of two elements in which the outer tubes have a common inlet pipe, and (e) an arrangement of parallel elements in which the inlet water pipes are arranged between and contiguous with the outer tubes, so as to form the wall of a combustion chamber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
