Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0929734/IV(a)/1> in which R is hydrogen or an alkali metal, R1 is hydrogen, a nitro group, a halogen atom, an alkyl (including cycloalkyl) radical, an aryl radical, an aralkyl radical or an aryl or aralkyl radical substituted by a halogen atom or a lower (1-4 C) alkyl or an alkoxy radical; and their preparation by heating under reflux in formamide an indene of formula <FORM:0929734/IV(a)/2> in which R3 is hydrogen or a radical of formula -CO.R1, wherein R1 is as above excepting a nitro group or a halogen atom, and the preparation of 2-nitro and 2-halo compounds by reaction of the 2-unsubstituted compounds with nitric acid or a halogenating agent. Indenes of the second general formula above in which R3 is other than hydrogen are prepared from the compound having R3=H by reaction with a carboxylic acid chloride, anhydride or mixed anhydride. Pharmaceutical preparations containing the compounds of the invention are mentioned for oral (tablets, capsules, liquids), parenteral (solutions) and rectal (suppositories) administration. The compounds have sedative, antispasmodic, antipyretic, vasodilatory and hypotensive properties.
