Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1056833/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are halogen atoms or alkyl groups having up to 4 carbon atoms, and n is 2 or 3, and their preparation by reaction of the corresponding aralkylamine with a metal cyanate in the presence of water. 2 - (21, 61 - Difluorophenyl) - ethylamine and its hydrochloride are prepared by reaction of 2,6-difluorobenzaldehyde with nitromethane to give 2-(21,61-difluorophenyl)-nitrostyrene, reducing this with lithium aluminium hydride, and treating with hydrochloric acid. The compounds of the invention have tranquillizing activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral administration.
