Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0861865/IV (b)/1> and non-toxic acid addition salts thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and may be hydrogen atoms, alkyl or aralkyl groups, and a process for the manufacture thereof by reacting compounds of the general formula <FORM:0861865/IV (b)/2> wherein X and Y are the same or different and are alkyl or aralkyl groups, with a dealkylating agent, for example, hydrobromic acid. The invention also comprises a process for the preparation of compounds (II) in which R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms only, by reduction of the nitro group in compounds of the general formula <FORM:0861865/IV (b)/3> and the preparation of compounds (I) by a combination of the two processes. N-Alkyl compounds (II) are prepared by alkylation of 3-aminomethyl-6,7-dialkoxy- or dihydroxy-phthalides. 3-Nitromethyl-meconin is prepared from opianic acid and nitromethane.
