Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0971743/C1/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl (1-5C), and R3 is alkyl (1-5C) which may be halogen-substituted; and their preparation by (1) reacting the appropriate phenethylamine and carboxylic acid anhydride and an organic nitrogen-containing base, and (2) reacting the appropriate phenethylamine and acyl halide in a non-polar solvent in the presence of an acceptor of the hydrogen halide formed during the reaction. Phenethylamine starting materials of formula <FORM:0971743/C1/2> may be prepared by hydrolysis of the N-formyl compounds. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds I with a carrier, diluent or solvent. Oral (tablets, capsules, syrups), rectal (suppositories) and parenteral (solutions) administration is mentioned. The compounds are hypotensive, antispasmodic, sedative, analeptic, anorexic and anticarcinogenic agents.
