Abstract

A pamoate, tannate or C12-18 fatty acid salt of a compound of the formula <FORM:1046404/C2/1> wherein the dotted line indicates that the compound may be saturated or unsaturated at the indicated position, each of X and X1 is H or halogen, or a C1-6-alkyl, C1-6-alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, C1-4-alkylsulphonyl or C2-8-dialkylsulphamoyl group, X and X1 being the same or different and more than one such radical may be present on each benzene ring and R is - (1) <FORM:1046404/C2/2> where R1 is H, C1-5-alkyl, C2-5-alkenyl or phenyl-C1-5-alkyl; (2) <FORM:1046404/C2/3> where R2 is H, C1-5-alkyl, C2-5-alkenyl, C1-5-hydroxyalkyl, methanesulphonyloxy-C1-5-alkyl or di-(C1-5-alkyl)amino-C1-5-alkyl; (3) =CH-CH2-CH2NR3R4 where each of R3 and R4 represents a C1-5-alkyl group or R3 and R4 are linked to form a 1-piperidyl, 1-pyrrolidyl, 4-morpholinyl or 1-(C1-5-alkyl)-4-piperazinyl residue; (4) -CH2-CH2-CH2NR3R4; (5) =CH-CH2-CH2NHR5 where R5 is H, C1-5-alkyl, C2-5-alkenyl, cycloalkyl or benzyl; or (6) -CH2CH2CH2NHR5 is prepared by contacting the dibenzocycloheptene, in the form of its free base or soluble salt, with the corresponding acid, or a soluble salt thereof, in an inert solvent.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a pamoate, tannate or C12-18 fatty acid salt of a compound of the formula <FORM:1046404/A5-A6/1> wherein the dotted line indicates that the compound may be saturated or unsaturated at the position indicated, each of X and X1 is H or halogen or a C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, C1-4 alkylsulphonyl, or C2-8 dialkylsulphamoyl group, each of X and X1 being the same or different and more than one such radical may be present in each benzene ring and R is <FORM:1046404/A5-A6/2> where R1 is H, C1-5 alkyl, C2-5 alkenyl or phenyl C1-5 alkyl; <FORM:1046404/A5-A6/3> where R2 is H, C1-5 alkyl, C2-5 alkenyl C1-5 hydroxyalkyl, methanesulphonyloxy -C1-5-alkyl or di-(C1-5 alkyl) amino-C1-5-alkyl; = CH-CH2-CH2NR3R4 where each of R3 and R4 represents a C1-5 alkyl group or R3 and R4 are linked to forma a 1-piperidyl, 1-pyroldidyl, 4-morpholinyl or 1-(C1-5 alkyl)-4-piperazinyl residue; -CH2-CH2-CH2-NR3R4 = CH-CH2CH2NHR5, where R5 is H, C1-5 -alkyl, C2-5 -alkenyl, cycloalkyl, or benzyl; or -CH2-CH2-CH2NHR5, and an inert carrier and optionally, other therapeutic constituents such as analgesics, antitussives and expectorants. The formulation may be administered either orally or parenterally. Added therapeutic constituents comprise, for example, aluminium aspirin, noscapine base and acetaminophen.
