Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0846560/IV(b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof (wherein R represents a C1-6 alkyl group or a heptyl group), and hypotensive agents containing the compounds in which R is a methyl or C3-6 alkyl group (see Group VI). The compound of the invention may be prepared by reduction of compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0846560/IV(b)/2> with lithium aluminium hydride. Indole-2-carboxyamides used as starting materials are prepared by reacting a lower alkyl indole-2-carboxylate with the appropriate alkylamine.ALSO:A hypotensive agent comprises a compound of the general formula <FORM:0846560/VI/1> or an acid addition salt thereof, wherein R is a C1-6 alkyl group other than ethyl, together with a non-toxic diluent or carrier. Preferred active ingredients are the 2-propyl- and 2-butyl-amino methylindoles and their hydrochlorides. The compositions may be administered orally or by intrapertioneal injection, the active ingredient if it is water soluble being administered in normal saline and if water insoluble in aqueous suspension containing a non-toxic dispersing agent such as gum acacia.
