Abstract

929,068. Furnaces. EDWIN DANKS & CO. (OLDBURY) Ltd. April 12, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 13502/61. Class 51 (1). In a shell type boiler having an internal flue 2, the firing end of the flue is provided over an upper portion thereof with a protective screen of refractory material in the form of an arch 1 of refractory bricks 3, the ends of the arch resting on metal shelves 4 welded to the flue. To hold the bricks in position should the natural stability of the arch be destroyed and to prevent their longitudinal displacement, for example, when slicing slag from the arch, hangers 5 are welded to the flue in circumferential rows, each hanger having oppositely projecting lugs 7 which respectively co-operate with slots 10 in adjacent bricks 3. The hangers increase slightly in length from the shelves 4 to the arch centre to provide an expansion gap 8 between the arch and flue. The centre space 14 through which the bricks are passed for threading on to the hangers is filled with plastic refractory material.
