Abstract
A process for the concentration of the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid content of a mixture of polychlorobenzoic acids comprises p mixing a solution of a mixture of polychlorobenzoic acids in a substantially water-immiscible solvent with an aqueous solution of an alkaline material, the amount of alkaline material being appreciably less than the amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the polychlorobenzoic acids, and separating the aqueous phase containing the salt, corresponding to the alkaline material, of the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid. The alkaline material is preferably present in an amount equivalent to the di-ortho substituted polychlorobenzoic acids and may be inorganic, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, or organic, e.g. diethanolamine, triethanolamine, trimethylamine or triethylamine. The water-immiscible solvent may be a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, preferably tetrachloroethylene, in which the concentration of polychlorobenzoic acid is 2-50% wt./vol. and about equal volumes of water and water-immiscible solvent are preferred. The extraction may be carried out batchwise in one or more stages or continuously and examples are given in which the extraction is carried out at 30 and 50 DEG C.
