Abstract
A process for the concentration of the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid content of a mixture of polychlorobenzoic acids comprises mixing an acid with an aqueous solution of salts of a mixture of polychlorobenzoic acids in the presence of a substantially water-immiscible solvent for the polychlorobenzoic acids, the amount of acid being appreciably less than the amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the total polychloro-benzoic acids, and separating the aqueous phase containing the salt of the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid. The extraction is preferably carried out using a sodium, potassium or diethanolamine salt, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and a chlorinated hydrocarbon or a hydrocarbon, preferably tetrachloro-ethylene, as the water-immiscible solvent, but reference is made also to the use of organic acids, including trichlorobenzoic acid. The amount of acid used is preferably equivalent to the non-di-ortho-polychlorobenzoic acids and equal volumes of water and water-immiscible solvent preferably are used. The aqueous solution preferably contains 2-50% by weight of the salt and the extraction can be carried out batch-wise in one or more stages or continuously. Examples are given in which the extraction temperature ranges up to 75 DEG C.
