A grilling appliance has a power unit normally enclosed by a supporting structure but with at least a part movable to a projecting position to support and rotate a spit detachably mounted opposite and longitudinally of a grill fret. As shown, Fig. 1, the appliance comprises a grill fret 5, which projects forwardly in use, and an end structure 7 including a casing 11 housing a power unit 8 on a chassis 10 which can be swung outwardly about axis X-X to operating position by depressing a button 14. The pointed end of the spit is engaged in a socket coupling 12 at the side of the power unit and the handle end is supported by a member 16. Alternatively, the power unit may be mounted on the rear of a hinged flap on the casing. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the spit is driven through reduction gearing, a final gear 20 being supported by an arm 21 furnished with a spit bearing 25 and pivoted about axis of a gear 23 which meshes with gear 20. In the stored position the arm 21 is swung into the casing. A further embodiment, Fig. 5, has a final gear in the form of a worm wheel 28 meshing with a worm 27 on a shaft 28 which in use projects outwards from the structure. The shaft is axially slidable in its bearings 29 and is influenced by a spring 35 which causes its inner end 32 to engage a complementary socket 33 within the casing, where it can be locked by a catch 36, or permits it to be withdrawn for movement of the shaft and arm 30 into a stored position in the supporting structure.
