A mechanical hoe comprises a non-rotatable shaft 21 which is housed within a tubular handle 12, is detachably connected to a hoe blade 23 at one end, and at the other end is in driving connection through suitable gearing with an electric motor 10, whereby the shaft is reciprocated within the handle 12.
