Abstract

762,945. Carpet sweepers. LACEY, L. P. Nov. 5, 1953 [Aug. 5, 1952], No. 19641/52. Class 138(1) A power take-off attachment for a carpet cleaner of the type having a rotatable brush driven from' a drive shaft 3, Fig. 1, operatively connected to an electric motor (supported in a housing 1) comprises, a base 7 adapted to be releasably, secured to the cleaner,' a take-off shaft 13 to engage the drive shaft 3, a reduction. gearing 12 supported by the base 7 and a flexible shaft 14 to be driven by the cleaner, which shaft 14 is operatively connected to the take-off shaft 13 through the gearing 12. The base member 7, Fig. 2, has turned-up ends 8, 9, and supports a. U-shaped member 10 the legs of which are slotted at 15 to receive bolts 11 to adjustably mount the reduction gear housing 12. Slots 17A in the end 9 receive screws 16, Fig. 1, to adjustably mount an arcuate plate member 17. Journalled in the end 8 and in a projection 21 of the base is a spindle 20 which is screw connected to a finger 18 slidable in a slot 19 in the base 7. The spindle 20 is rotatable by a knob 22. Referring to Fig. 1, the carpet cleaner housing 1 has a partition 5, provided with an aperture 4 through which passes the motor drive shaft 3, and a front aperture 2 normally closable by a releasable cap (not shown).' The shaft 3 has a groove 6 normally connected by the drive belt to the brush (not shown-). In order to use the power take-off attachment, the belt and brush are removed and the base 7 is passed through the aperture 2 so that the plate 17 rests in the aperture 4 and the base rests on the bottom of the aperture 2. The knob 22' is then rotated to draw the finger 18 into' engagement with the inner end of the housing so as to secure the attachment in place. A friction wheel 23 on the shaft 13 is then in engagement with the shaft 3. In a modification described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown) the plate 17 is provided with three radial recesses in which are adjustably secured plate members which can thus engage the periphery of aperture 4 of larger size. The flexible shaft 14 may be detachably connected to a hand polisher as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown) or to an eggwhisk. Instead of a friction drive between the shafts 3 and 13 the shaft 3: could be provided with a pinion adapted to be engaged by a gear wheel secured on the shaft 13.
