Abstract

Molybdenum disulphide, suitable as a lubricant is prepared by extracting from powdered molybdenite by froth flotation with a flotation oil, a molybdenum disulphide powder containing less than 8% silica and from 0,5 to 6% flotation oil, and then reducing the residual oil content to 0,05 to ,5% by evaporation. The powder obtained may be pulverized in a fluid energy mill and the residue of oil inhibits oxidation. Preferably the flotation oil has an end boiling point above 250 DEG C. Reference is made to the use of pine oil together with kerosene or pine tar oil. Evaporation may be effected in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide at temperatures from 800 DEG -1350 DEG F.ALSO:Molybdenum disulphide, suitable as a lubricant, is prepared by extracting from powdered molybdenite by froth flotation with a flotation oil, a molybdenum disulphide powder containing less than 8% silica and from 0.5 to 6% flotation oil, and then reducing the residual oil content to 0.05 to 0.5% by evaporation.
