Abstract
Germanium values are extracted from the ashes produced by burning fossil fuel, e.g. coal under pressure in the presence of liquid water at temperatures less than 374 DEG C. The water present and the condensate produced by the burning are reused to slurry the starting material. After combustion the ashes and water are separated and the germanium bearing ashes collected. According to the example, pulverized coal was burnt at 250 DEG C. at 150 atmospheres pressure, and the water and ashes then separated, the water obtained being returned with condensate to the start of the process.
